Ok so when I'm playing *any* 3d game, even a low end game like Ragnarok online, it will randomly freeze my computer. It won't freeze when not playing a game, however every now and again I'll get the BSOD and it'll auto-restart.
I have updated drivers and used nVidia's tools to optimize "system stability" which altered some of the speeds/voltages on the cards in hopes that this would fix the problem, but to no avail. I have also tried only using one video card (for both cards) and have the same problem.
I can usually play anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours before a freeze occurs.
I did memtest86 for a while, and my ram seems to be fine -- however I ran a few ATI diagnostic tests on the card and found that it was running pretty hot.
The video card was running at about 105 C during the stress test. I couldn't find a max temp for the 8500gt on nVidia's website, but the normal max temperature value for nVidia cards seems to be about 105. I seriously doubt, though, that this is the normal operation temperature.
Anyway, I tried lowering some settings, such as hardware acceleration, but still randomly having the freezing problem. It's completely intermittent as I said, sometimes it'll freeze within the first 5 minutes of playing a game, and other times it'll run fine for 3 hours without any problems.
Oh, and as far as performance goes, I'm pretty happy with the quality and framerate of the games I play with this computer, I just don't want it to crash. I know that's a lot to ask with the 8500gt. If someone were to just suggest getting a new card (which makes sense because the 8500gt isn't a very good card at all), just know that I'm not looking for anything way better. Honestly a lower model would be fine as well, I just care about stability at this point. SLI isn't even really a big issue, if I want to upgrade later, I can.
I also attached my DxDiag if that helps.
